The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojisola Meranda, officially took possession of the Speaker’s office at the Assembly Complex on Monday.
Videos circulating online captured her supporters offering prayers and expressing gratitude as she assumed her new role.
Security within the Assembly Complex was noticeably tightened ahead of the plenary session scheduled for the same day.
The plenary comes amid speculations of tension within the House, as the former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, maintained over the weekend that he is still the rightful Speaker.
Obasa was removed on January 13, 2025, by a majority of lawmakers over allegations of misconduct and financial mismanagement.
However, he has denied the accusations and challenged his colleagues to provide evidence.
Today’s plenary marks the third session presided over by Meranda since Obasa’s removal.
The former Speaker has not attended any of the previous sittings.
