Dr Olusola Odumosu, FCT Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), says the adoption of new and smart technology would help in tackling vandalism in the territory.
Odumosu made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Abuja.
Odumosu observed that the deployment of technological devices and applications would go a long way in curtailing vandalism of Critical National Asset and Infrastructure (CNAI).
According to him, the FCT Administration under the leadership of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, was working tirelessly to ensure technology is infused in the security architecture of the territory.
The commandant said that the continuous destruction of street lights, manhole covers and other private and government properties in the FCT has remained a matter of concern to the corps.
Odumosu said that the operatives of the command would not relent in effecting arrest and the mounting of security surveillance across the territory to contain the perpetrators of such crimes.
“We have made so many arrests of vandals in the FCT but it is disheartening to see that they have refused to relent as more arrests are made everyday.
“The unfortunate part is that most of the vandalism of CNAI in the FCT is mostly done at night and this is one of the areas where technology will be most effective.
“For example, the use of Close Circuit Television (CCTV) will go a long way in monitoring their activities which will lead to real time intelligence and arrest,” he said.
He alerted that criminals have their informants situated at the areas where the vandalism is to take place who alert them when they notice security operatives closing in.
“At areas where we have already gotten intelligence information of vandalism attempts, we could install sensors or threat detectors that would give automatic signals to the NSCDC control room, hence fostering speedy and effective response.”
He lauded the FCT minister for deployment of operational vehicles and motorcycles to the command, adding that the deployment of more operational vehicles would go a long way in ensuring better security coverage.
Odumosu said that the corps would continue to take tough disciplinary measures on vandals in the FCT, to serve as a deterrent to others with criminal intentions.
“We will also continue to collaborate with other security agencies in ensuring the FCT and the nation are properly secured,” he said. (NAN).
