From Omobolaji Oyegunle, London A Nigerian doctor and his wife who enslaved a young man for nearly 25 years after bringing him to Britain have both been sent to jail.
Gynecologist Emmanuel Edet, 61, and midwife Antan Edet, 58, kept their fellow Nigerian as a “house boy” after they arrived in 1989.
Ofonime Sunday Inuk, 40, worked unpaid up go 17 hours a day cleaning, cooking and caring for the couple’s two children, a court heard.
He eventually alerted a charity to his plight when Edets went to Nigeria for Christmas in 2013. They were arrested the following March.
Sentencing them at Harrow Crown court, Judge Graham Arran said Mr. Inuk was ‘robbed of a normal life’.
The court heard that his victim impact statement spoke of being ‘sad’, alone and depressed ‘. He kept a diary about his treatment at the hands of people he called ‘sir’ and ‘ma’.
The Edets, from Perivale, north-west London, were found guilty last month of cruelty to a child under 16, servitude and assisting unlawful immigration. They were both jailed for six years.
