ABUJA – Akeem Oyetunji Niger Delta Avengers, the militant group attacking oil facilities in the Niger Delta has called on Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari to call for a referendum so that Nigerians could determine if they want to continue to live together.
In a tweet on its Twitter handle on Saturday, the group said Buhari should emulate Prime Minister David Cameron.
United Kingdom just held a referendum which favoured withdrawal from the European Union, EU.
“President Buhari borrow a leaf from PM David Cameron, call for a referendum and let Nigerians decides like they did to vote you into Power,” the Avengers tweeted.
Barely an hour after the tweet, the group also issued a statement asking President Buhari to visit Niger Delta region and see for himself how the people are suffering.
The statement issued by its spokesperson, Brig Gen. Moduch Agbinibo and titled ‘BUHARI VISIT THE NIGER DELTA AND SEE FOR YOURSELF’ reads in full:
“The Nigeria President Buhari should visit Ugborodo host to Chevron crude oil Export terminal/EGTL gas plant, Ogulagha host to Shell Forcados Crude Oil Export terminal/tank farm, Bonny Island host to Shell Bonny Crude Oil Export terminal/NLNG gas terminal, Brass host to Agip/ENI export terminal, Ibeno host to ExxonMobil Qua Iboe crude export terminal.
“These are just the export terminals not talking about the numerous oil and gas flowstations and the oil Wells that criss cross the length and breadth of the Niger delta.
“Mr. President come and see for yourself what the host communities are going through in the hands of Nigeria government and the multinationals.”
Prompt News Online recalls that President Buhari recently called off his official visit to Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
He was scheduled to flag off clean up Ogoni programme in line with UNEP recommendations.
However, President Buhari cancelled the trip at the eleventh hour. He sent his Vice, Prof Yemi Osinbajo to represent him.
