Niger House of Assembly has inaugurated a seven-man ad-hoc committee to investigate alleged molestation of residents by members of the task force on ban on motorcycles within Minna metropolis.
The resolution was passed after a motion under Matters of Urgent Public Importance raised by Mr Malik Bosso, member representing Bosso Constituency, at the plenary in Minna on Tuesday.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the state government had, in June, announced ban on operations of commercial motorcyclists within the state capital.
The state government had also reduced the time for private motorcycle operations within Minna metropolis to between 6 am. and 9 pm.
Speaker of the assembly, Mr Abdullahi Bawa, while reading the resolution, said that the committee would investigate the activities of the task force on enforcement of ban on the operations of commercial motorcycles.
Earlier, Bosso, in his motion, claimed that the task force had been moving round Minna with impunity, beating motorcyclists of all categories with sticks.
He lamented that the task force had been acting outside the ban placed on commercial motorcycle operations.
The lawmakers noted that some motorcyclists, in the process of running to escape the task force, had been hitting some passers-by or colliding with moving vehicles, thus causing serious injuries and damage to property.
According to him, the task force members, who are heavily armed with all manners of weapons, usually go into districts within Minna to confiscate motorcycles parked in private houses and business premises.
Bosso said that the activities of the task force members were causing unwarranted communal unrests, urging the assembly to call them to order and compel them to act within the limits of the law. (NAN)
