A non-governmental organisation, Save Our Soul (SOS) Children’s Villages, has empowered 13 women groups in Plateau with a N260 million grant to expand their businesses.
Mr Eghosa Erhumunse, the NGO National Director, said on Monday in Jos that the money was for the women to boost their businesses and build capacity to care for their children.
Erhumunse said that the grant would also help alleviate poverty and shield women and their children from vices.
The director advised the beneficiaries to invest the money solely in its intended purpose and not to spend it on frivolities.
Plateau Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs Caroline Dafur, thanked the organisation for the gesture.
Dafur said that the ministry would ensure that the beneficiaries invest the money accordingly since there was an already existing monitoring structure to guide them.
Some of the beneficiaries who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) expressed gratitude to the organisation for coming to their aid.
Mrs Christian Gyang, a group leader of one of the groups, said her group would invest in farming Irish potatoes and thanked the organisation.
Mrs Grace Nwadi, another group leader, said her group planned to invest in food stuffs and thanked the organisation for the initiative.
Mrs Davou Helen said her group planned to build a mini gas plant with their grant. (NAN).
