The Federal Government will soon make its position known on the future of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Minister of Youths and Sports Minister, Solomon Dalung has said.
Fielding questions from newsmen on Thursday at the Abuja National Stadium, the minister said the committee set up by the government has submitted its report and made recommendations.
He therefore assured that once a decision is taken, he would make it public.
Alluding to speculation that the Sports Commission may be scrapped, Mr. Dalung cited the example of the National Planning Commission that was scrapped having been merged with the Budget Office, saying that the NSC issue would become clearer in weeks to come.
“If it is scrapped, I will announce it.
“I will come and address it and I will tell you why we scrapped it.
“But since it has not been done, we will not speculate.
But, I think this is originating from the misconception of what becomes of the commission under the merged ministry of youth and sport development.
“Of course, Mr. president has recently merged National Planning Commission with National budget but in our own case since we were merge, a committee has been set up, the committee has made recommendations and once the recommendations are approved, we shall call the press and brief them,” the minister said.
Pundits opine that the activities of the National Sports Commission are being crippled since the merger, noting that the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Youths and Sports appears to be frustrating the efforts of the Director General of the NSC, Alhassan Yakmut.
