Apparently not happy with the ongoing protests by young persons in many parts of the country against the newly formed Special Weapons and Tactics (#EndSWAT), youths in Nasarawa state on Friday, staged protest in support of the new outfit, SWAT.
The protesters under the Coalition of Progressive Northern Youth, were led by the coordinator of the group, Mr Jamilu Abubakar. They marched from the Emir’s Palace to the Government House in Lafia, the state Capital.
The Permanent Secretary Government House Mr. Jibrin Giza, received them on behalf of Governor Abdullahi Sule, and promised to act on their letter accordingly.
“We are here in solidarity to President Muhammadu Buhari and Inspector General of Police for the disbandment of SARS and formation of SWAT, he said.
Abubakar opined that the formation of SWAT is an excellent thought and strategy toward reforming the Nigerian Police and addressing the security challenges the country is presently faced with.
“The formation of the new security unit (SWAT) will go a long way in addressing the challenges of kidnapping, Armed robbery, Armed banditry, terrorism and other crimes in Nigeria,” he said.
The group also believe that SARS had helped in reducing crime and criminality in the country and appealed to the federal government to ensure synergy between the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies for the prompt arrest of security challenges in the country.
“We appreciate his Excellency for his swift reaction to calls by Nigerians for disbandment of SARS and formation of SWAT.
He also equally salutes the efforts of the Inspector General of Police for his commitment towards reforming the Nigeria Police to protect the lives and property of Nigerians.
The protesters were seen carrying placards with inscriptions like “No to anti-democratic forces and agents of disunity”, “Encourage the Nigerian police with good reforms”, “SWAT is the answer” and so on.
