The National President, National Association of Nigerian Students NANS, Comrade Chinoso Obasi has described the killing of two Students of Nasarawa State Polytechnic Lafia, as barbaric.
It would be recalled that violence broke out at the gate of the Institution on Wednesday after a detachment of police fired shots at a peaceful protest by the students who have earlier occupied the Lafia-Akwanga road, demonstrating the death of a part two students of the Department of Accountancy of the institution killed by a hit and run driver.
Comrade Obasi condemned the use of force by the Police in addressing a protest by unarmed Students, which later claimed the life of one Student and injuring many others.
NANS therefore ask the state government and security agencies to ensure that the culprits are brought to book, without further delay.
“The act of killing unarmed Students by the Police is very barbaric and condemnable, as we strongly believe that the government must put an end to this without further delay. Lives are sacred and people who are paid to protect the lives and properties of citizens, must not turn around to become a threat to our lives as Nigerians”
He also commiserated with the families of the victim and the institution.
Meanwhile, the NANS has called for the immediate reopening of the institution saying it is opposed to the closure which may be tantamount to another attempt to prolong the already delayed academic calendar of the institution, coupled with the added risk of putting the students by on the road to their various homes, across the country.
The NANS President assured that the Union is working and will be visiting the institution this week to ensure that peace returns, so that normal academic activities can resume.
