Twenty-four hours after the Nigerian Senate warned Multichoice Nigeria not to dare Nigeriaians by going ahead to hike the tariffs of its products while the matter is yet being investigated, the company has started the implementation of the new price regime.
The Senate of Federal Republic of Nigeria had on Tuesday at the inauguration of a seven-member Adhoc Committee of the Senate headed by the Senate Deputy Chief Whip, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, asked MultiChoice Nigeria to stay action on the proposed tariffs increase.
Senate President Dr. Ahmad Lawan who spoke while Inuagurating the Committee had said no foreign country under any guise should take Nigeria for granted, adding that “Nigeria had places for foreign investment, but wasn’t an invitation to breach its laws, insisting that there were enough laws to punish erring foreign companies”.
But the Senate President’s warnings may have fallen on deaf ears as Multichoice Nigeria, a pay television service provider called DSTV, has continued to charge the imposed tariffs nationwide.
Prompt News Online can confirm that subscribers whose subscriptions have elapsed are being charged the new tariffs while others whose subscription are about to end are being called by Multichoice Nigeria tele-marketers to remind them of the new tariffs.
Subscribers are also being asked to pay the new subscription rates or pay the old rates before the expiration of their current subscription.
The above explains that the stern warning issued by Senate President on Tuesday in the backdrop of complaints lodged at the Upper Legislative Chamber, leading to resolutions that there should be no price hike and that it should as well revert to pay-per tv service have been ignored by Multichoice Nigeria.
