The wife of the President, Aisha Muhammadu Buhari has flagged off the Maternal and New Born Child Health (MNCH) week in Kebbi state with the commissioning of the Maternal and Newborn Child Health Center, Birnin Yari- Jega, at the Jega General Hospital.
The wife of the President called on state governors’ wives across the country to assist their husbands in reducing maternal deaths in the country.
Mrs. Buhari who stated that she had a responsibility along with governors wives to reduce maternal mortality also called on Wives of Governors to include the maternal, newborn and Child health week as part of their programmes as a way of assisting their husbands and encourage them to provide adequate resources for the project in order to further expand the health coverage of the vulnerable group.
She congratulated Kebbi state governor, His Excellency, Atiku Bagudu for recognising the poor maternal health indices in the state and finding ways of addressing it, calling on other state governors to emulate Kebbi state.
Speaking at the occasion, the Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole, said the FG would encourage the rural postings of Health workers especially during the NYSC programme to boost the human resources needs at the Primary Health centres across the country.
He also called on the wives of Executive Governors to partner with health teams in their states to champion advocacy for improved health Agenda.
Furthermore, the Minister called on the states to ‘’promulgate enabling laws through the stat Assembly in areas of Girl Child Education, Female Mutilation and Implementation of violent Against Person prohibition Acts 2015’’
Professor Adewole commended Kebbi State for being pro-active in revitalising the PHC centres and drawing attention to the issue of adequate manpower and
Equipment which needs to be put in place for the provision of quality PHC services for excellent outcome, which he said was in line with the change Agenda of Mr. President in the health Sector.
The event was witnessed by the wives of the Senate President, Speaker of the House of Representatives, some wives of Governors, Development partners and traditional rulers amongst others.
