Flamingoes Head coach, Bala Nikyu has described Nigeria’s victory over Mexico on Monday morning as a huge motivation for his team ahead of their quarter-final showdown with Spain.
Nigeria hammered Mexico 3-0 to finish ahead their North American opponents at the top of Group D with goals from Rasheedat Ajibade, Uchenna Kanu and Aminat Yakubu ensuring the incredible victory for the African giants.
Nikyu says the team was full of joy and excitement over his ladies performance against the Mexicans and are fully motivated to battle the European giants in the quarter-final stage.
“We put in a very good performance, and we’re extremely happy to have beaten a strong Mexican side. The result enables us to finish top of the group and to move on to the next stage full of confidence,” Nikyu admitted.
Meanwhile, Head coach of Mexico, Leonardo Cuellar has admitted his side could not match the Flamingoes in the last group D top of the table clash on Monday.
“It was a tough match because our opponents took a very physical approach. It didn’t work out for us as we tried to match Nigeria physically instead of performing as a team.
“We need to look at why we didn’t manage to play our usual game, and aim to do better against Japan,” he assured.
Nigeria battles Group C second placed, Spain while Mexico will take on free-scoring Group C toppers, Japan in the quarter-final respectively on Friday morning.
