Nigeria’s Premier Church – Methodist Church Nigeria, Archdiocese of Abuja on Tuesday kicked off activities to mark forty years of her presence in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.
The activities started with a press conference held at the Methodist Cathedral of Unity, Wuse, Abuja.
Addressing the press, Archbishop of Abuja, The Most Revd Dr Michael Olusegun Akinwale, said that handing over Nigeria’s affairs to God is the only panacea to the economic quagmire facing the country.
He added that the press conference is to flag off the Five-week celebration of forty years of Methodism in Abuja, the spiritual leader opined that Nigerians should always think positive of Nigeria and always pray for her leaders.
He however cautioned that “the leaders should be truthful to the nation.”
Citing the example of “In God we trust” inscription on the American dollar, Archbishop Akinwale said “if Nigeria returns to God and lean on Him, He will heal our land of her multi-faceted problems.”
The 40 years anniversary celebration of Methodism in Abuja commenced on Tuesday September 3rd with several activities line up with the grand finale thanksgiving service holding on Sunday October 13th 2024.
According to the Archbishop, “We should take this nation back to God. there is confusion everywhere. It is not for us to be condemning our leaders. Prophet Joel said, like the leaders, like the led. Righteousness exalts a nation but sin is a reproach.”
Nigerians should “ask God to change the heart of our leaders to be compassionate.
“John 15:5 says apart from me you can do nothing. We must acknowledge the fact that we can do nothing without God.”
He concluded that “it is against this background and the impact of the Methodist Church in Abuja within the last forty years that has necessitated the rolling out of the drum as we celebrate:
Forty years of Scriptural holiness
Forty years of Effective Evangelism
Forty years of Social Services
Forty years of Health Services
Forty years of Mission work
Forty years of the dissemination of the Gospel
Forty years of Church planting
Forty years of Fellowship
Forty years of Ecumenism
Forty years of Impactful Ministry
Forty years of Intrinsic Homily
Forty years of sustaining cultural diversity
Forty years of shaping the course of our National history, among others.
Earlier, the Archdiocesan Lay President, Sir AVM Dr John Kayode-Beckley had welcomed Methodist faithfuls and gentle men of the press to the season of celebration of God’s faithfulness, goodness and in the convergence of humanity and divinity.
He said that it is a season to appreciate God for thus far He has helped the premier church in Nigeria in the propagation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ with the assurance of further exploit.
The Chairman of the Central Planning Committee, Sir Dr Charles Akpabio, appreciated God for His sustaining grace and the opportunity to gather all Methodist members in the Archdiocese for the landmark celebration.
The Bishop of Nyanya, The Rt. Rev J. Kehinde Adeyemi and Bishop of Kubwa (Archbishop -elect), The Rt Rev Dr Ogan Igwe, FCAI led other leaders of the Church to join the Archbishop at the Press Conference.
