I earlier wrote a piece titled, ‘Man Like Frank’ during the build-up to the 2019 general elections. The piece focused on Bukola Saraki and his political tactics similar to that of Frank Underwood (the main character of a popular Netflix Series). In this article, I admired the pure genius known as Bukola Saraki, from the Senate elections in 2015, running the most progressive senate in recent history amongst others.
The events that followed after publishing that article have left me in great shock as well the nation. Bukola Saraki left the ruling APC party and went back to familiar territory in form of PDP. This was after all the Kwara stooges had already cross carpeted. However, this move was expected as APC had made it their mission to kick him off the party.
At this point one thing was certain, Saraki will attempt to run for Aso Rock in which he will lose the election, which he did. I mean it was less than six months to the primaries that he joined the party. It was mission impossible. Then he decided to back to the Senate to continue his leadership. It is believed that running for President was a test run for the 2023 general elections to see if he has a chance.
He campaigned all round the nation followed the Akitu/Obi campaign everywhere. He was in need of a victory more than any other person. If President buhari had won, he will be in big trouble. He had to become Akitulated to survive.
After postponement, usual falsification of results and voters intimidation, President Buhari emerged victorious. But the real shocker came when it was announced that Bukola Saraki the current Senate President and two-term senator had lost his senatorial seat to the ruling party.
This sent shock waves all over the nation. The signs were there but I still never expected it. He was booed when he went to campaign in his home town. The people came out to condemn him publicly. His half-sister had plotted a hitch free plan to disgrace him out of power. The plan restricted Saraki from exercising his federal might as the senate president to influence the election. It is left to the public to decide. However he was not the only shocker, Ajimobi of Oyo State lost the election as two term incumbent governor and two term senator.
He would have been able to withstand the pressure of the APC led government if he remained as senate president. But now what is expected is political assassination.
He currently seeing out his last days in government with charges of corruption from EFCC in which they are seeking to seize his properties. Although the court did not grant the order, there is more persecution to come. This is obviously a ploy by Magu to get back to Saraki for ensuring he was never confirmed by the Senate as the Chairman of the Commission.
Saraki is very much disadvantaged. The offa robbery is still in court, he is now leveled with charges by the EFCC. The executive order six is ripe and ready to be enforced against him, which will allow the federal government to seize all his properties without a court order, as long they suspect you acquired from corruption and other corrupt practices.
He has however been appointed as an Ambassador at Large for the International Human Rights Commission. This could (be) a good career path for him, joining international organizations and even become a special envoy for peace keeping missions.
He was commended in his appointment letter which stated that his efforts in the stability of Nigeria and his firm leadership of the senate and adjudged to be among the most proactive parliaments across the world. This could a possible career path for him, who knows? Just like Frank in Season 5 seems like Saraki has seen his exit sign in his political career. He is out power and the ruling government wants his head on a stake.
Where next can Saraki turn to? Is there any way out for him? Can he attain this level of political power again?
‘You will be disgraced out of politics’ these were words of Olusola Saraki to his first son, Bukola. It seems words are coming to pass. This could be manifest of a Father’s Curse. Be a good child to your parents. Happy children’s Day!
