A 56-year-old man, Obideyi Omasuyi, on Tuesday appeared before an Osogbo Chief Magistrate’s Court accused of defrauding a man of N270,000, on the pretext of selling a parcel of land to him.
Obideyi, whose address was not provided, is facing a two-count charge of fraud and stealing.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against him.
The Prosecutor, Insp. John Idoko told the court that Omasuyi committed the offences sometime in January at Ita-Olokan area of Osogbo.
Idoko said the defendant collected the N270,000 from the complainant, Mr Rasaki Suleiman on the pretext of selling a parcel of land to him, a representation he knew was false.
“The defendant converted the money to his personal use,” the prosecutor said.
Idoko said the offences contravened Sections 419 and 390 (9) of the Criminal Law of Osun, 2002.
Defense Counsel, Mr Najite Okobie prayed the court to grant his client bail in the most liberal terms.
The Magistrate, Mrs A. O Awodele, granted the defendant N300,000 bail with two sureties in like sum.
Awodele ordered that one of the sureties must be a civil servant with evidence of three years tax payment to Osun Government.
He added that the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction.
Thereafter the magistrate adjourned the case until Oct. 29 for mention.
