No fewer than five travellers lost their lives in a lone accident that occurred in Ikaram Akoko, in the Akoko North West Local Government Area of Ondo State.
It was gathered that the 18-seater bus conveying the victims had one of its tyre busted on high speed, leading to loss of wheel control.
An eyewitness said that the tyre busted along a junction leading to two neighbouring communities, just as the incident had since thrown the agrarian community into mourning.
“It happened very close to a junction leading to Ajowa and Akunnu Akoko, infact tears rolled down today. No one is happy ever since the incident occurred today,” an eyewitness said.
Confirming the incident, the unit commander of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ikare-Akoko, Mr Oluropo Alabi, warned motorists against reckless driving and use of expired tyres.
Efforts to speak with the Chief Medical Director of Ikare State Specialist Hospital, Dr. Ade Idowu were unsuccessful, but a mortuary attendant who didn’t want his name mentioned, disclosed that six bodies had been deposited in the morgue while many others were in emergency ward of the hospital.
However, the paramount ruler of Ikaram Akoko Oba Andrew Momodu, said the community had approached federal ministry of works and Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA), to mount speed breakers around the scene of accident noted for fatal crashes.
