Peter Lawal and Lawal Shehu were among were among players who on Wednesday advanced to the semi-finals in the male category of the ongoing DavNotch National Open Tennis Championship in Abuja.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Chima Micheal and Abdulmumin Babalala are the two other prominent players who moved to the semi-finals.
According to NAN, the tennis players progressed after winning their quarterfinals games in the ongoing competition at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium.
Lawal defeated Canice Abua 6-3 6-7(6) 6-3 and Shehu beat Nonso Madueke 7-6 (3) 6-2.
The seeded number eight Chima Micheal beat his opponent Kushimo Usman 6-2 6-1 while Babalola beat Uche Oparaoji 7-6(4) 6-4.
Speaking with NAN after the match, Micheal said he was happy that he won his quarterfinals match.
“I was not an easy game but I thank God that I won my game. I also won the double men game.
“I will play the semi-final single and quarter final double on Thursday. I want to record a good success at the end of the competition, ” he said.
NAN reports other players, who qualified for the semifinal match, are seeded number one Henry Atseye who beat Isaac Attah 6-3, 1-0.
Thomas Otu beat Clifford Enosoregbe 6-2 6-4 and Gabriel Friday beat Oche Adehi 6-3 6-2.
NAN reports that DavNotch Nigeria Limited is sponsoring the competition which is being organised by the Nigeria Tennis Federation (NTF).
NAN reports that a total of 32 players are featuring in the female category while 64 male players are featuring in the main category.
The championship, which started on May 5 with the preliminary matches, is expected to end on Saturday. (NAN)
