Sunshine Stars Football Club of Akure scored through substitute Sadeeq Yusuf in the 90th minute on Sunday for a 1-0 win over visiting Warri Wolves.
Yusuf scored with a powerful header to a pass from another substitute, Stephen Begbaji, in the Match Day 5 game played at the Ondo State Sports Complex in Akure.
Sunshine Stars made five substitutions in the second half of the 2020/2021 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) match.
But their best chance of the game was in the 61st minute, when forward Chinedu Udechuckwu’s shot was deflected off target.
Also, in the 81st minute, Sunshine Stars’ had another shot going inches wide off target.
Sunshine Stars’ coach Gbenga Ogunbote, during a post-match interview, said he was happy the it was “victory at last”.
Ogunbote said it would have been a disaster if his team did not get the maximum points, saluting his players for their resilience and courage to push through till the end.
“It was a hard-earned win, and it would have been a disaster if we didn’t get the three points. It would have been a setback. I salute the resilience and the courage of my players.
“We have played five games in about three weeks, and it is the same set of players. I know we are going to have a little challenge as regards fatigue, but thank God we got the three points today,” he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Sunshine Stars now have seven points from five matches.
