Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt Hon Yussuff Sulaimon Lasun has called for an enabling environment for professionals to practice.
Deputy Speaker noted that Nigeria can only develop through promotion of technology and skill acquisition.
He maintained that an enabling environment should be created for professionals and engineers to practice in the country rather than allowing foreigners to suppress the local engineers.
Deputy Speaker made this remark when the management of Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors paid a courtesy call on him yesterday in his office.
According to him our society can be developed through the promotion of skill acquisition and if professionals are allowed to practice what they learnt in the higher institution.
“It is saddening that since independence we still have foreigners dominating the sector that could develop the nation’s technology.
“I feel pained that our professionals are not being utilized maximally, technology is about trial, practice, failure and correction before success could be achieved”.
He said beyond schooling you have to practice your profession that some professionals in Nigeria today are masters in their field in specific regards to law and medicine, but engineering profession is not like that because they are only certified but not practicing due to foreign dominance.
He said though we make laws has legislators but professionals are to help by coming up with proper laws.
Lasun assured that the 8th Assembly would legislate with a difference by bringing all sectors both private and public together to educate the legislators about laws that can help in moving the country to the next level.
Earlier in her speech Mrs. Mercy Iyortyer who led the Institute to the Deputy Speaker explained that institute came to congratulate him on his election.
She drew the attention of the Deputy speaker to Public Procurement Act 2007 whereby Quantity Surveyors are not represented in the Council of Procurement.
“We call upon the House to intervene and have the Institute included in the council of the Public procurement Act “, Wole Oladimeji Chief Press Secretary to the Deputy Speaker quoted her as saying.
