The Lagos State House of Assembly has issued a stern warning to its impeached Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, urging him not to destabilize the legislative arm following his recent claims that his removal lacked due process.
In a statement signed by Ogundipe Olukayode on behalf of the Assembly, lawmakers reaffirmed their decision to impeach Obasa on January 13 and expressed full support for the newly elected Speaker, Mojisola Meranda.
“The decision to remove Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa was taken within our constitutional rights,” the statement read.
“Over two-thirds of the members of the Lagos State House of Assembly are solidly united behind the new Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda. We stand by this decision and are committed to upholding good governance and fostering a harmonious relationship with other arms of government.”
The statement further emphasized that the Assembly members, representing various constituencies across the state, have the statutory authority to remove principal officers, including the Speaker.
Olukayode criticized Obasa’s actions as unwarranted and cautioned against any attempt to create unrest within the Assembly.
“I urge the former Speaker to embrace peace and harmony, as adopted by others. His current stance risks heating the polity, which will not be tolerated,” Olukayode stated.
“The majority of distinguished members who unanimously elected Rt. Hon. Meranda will resist any efforts to destabilize the Assembly.”
Obasa, who has represented Agege Constituency I since 2007, served as Speaker from June 2015 until his impeachment earlier this month.
