Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Rasaq Atunwa has confirmed defection of 20 members of the State House of Assembly elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress.
Reading the letter of the defecting members, Atunwa said they cited the crisis rocking the PDP as the main reason for their action.
They also assured they consulted with their constituencies before taking the decision. Thereafter, those concerned led by principal officers of the House, got up one after the other to confirm their decision to join the APC.
“Our decision to leave the PDP was not made without thorough evaluation and extensive consultations,” Atunwa said. He also cited the provision of Section 109 sub-section 1 and G of the nation’s constitution.
With this development, Kwara State House of Assembly now has 22 APC members out of 24 lawmakers.
Prompt News recalls that Kwara state governor Abdulfatah Ahmed was one of the five PDP governors that defected to the APC late last year.
The other four governors are Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers), Rabiu Kwankwaso (Kano), Murtala Nyako (Adamawa) and Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto).
Also, 27 members of the PDP in Sokoto House of Assembly as well as 37 members of the House of Representatives have defected to the APC.
