No fewer than 120 persons may have been killed and hundreds injured during a bomb explosion that rocked the ancient City of Kano, North West Nigeria.
The explosion occurred at the Central Mosque during the weekly Friday prayer when two suicide bombers blew themselves up.
While Muslims faithful scampered for safety after the explosion, gunmen were said to have opened fire on them, killing many in the process.
The Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi often leads prayers at the mosque but was said to be in Saudi Arabia when the blast occurred.
No group has claimed responsibility for the blast but it appears it could be the dreaded Boko Haram sect.
Boko Haram insurgents have been intensifying attacks in the north eastern part of Nigeria despite the state of emergency that was in place.
However, they have carried out series of attacks outside the north east with pockets of blasts in other parts of the north.
