The Kano State Police Commissioner, Mr Rabi’u Yusuf, has warned officers who would participate in Saturday’s local government election against acts capable of denting the image of the Force.
Yusuf gave the warning at a Town Hall Meeting on the state of preparedness and citizens concern in the build up to the local government elections in Kano on Thursday.
The meeting was organised by an NGO, Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) in collaboration with the Department for International Development (DFID) and Action Aid Nigeria.
Yusuf, who was represented by the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Abubakar Zubairu warned that any Officer found waiting during the election would be sanctioned.
“We have already directed them to do their work in accordance with the laid down rules and regulations as anyone who compromiseS will be appropriately sanctioned.
“We are not going to compromise our position but anybody found wanting will be dealt with,” he said.
He, however advised parents not to allow their children to be used as political thugs as the Police had been directed to arrest thugs caught carrying dangerous weapons before, during and after the elections.
“We are ready for any eventuality as we have enough mobile personnel who will provide security during the election,” Zubairu said.
He stressed the need for aspirants to warn their supporters to remain peaceful as well as ensure peaceful conduct during the election.
He assured the people of the state that the police would collaborate with other sister security agencies to ensure security of lives and properties during the election across the state.
In his remarks, the CITAD Senior Programme Manager, Mr Isah Garba said the meeting was aimed at reviewing the state of preparedness toward the election.
He called on politicians in the state to give security agencies the necessary support and cooperation to ensure a hitch-free election.
The meeting was attended by various stakeholders including representatives of the political parties and National Orientation Agency (NOA), among others.
