The Kaduna State Internal Revenue Service has sealed up the headquarters of the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company over N600 million in unpaid taxes.
The Executive Chairman of the service, Jerry Adams, who led the operation on Friday said the sealing up of Kaduna Electric is an exercise of its vested powers under Section 104 (1) & (4) of the Personal Income Tax Act, 2011 and Section 37 (3) & (4) of the Kaduna State Tax Codification and Consolidation Law, 2020.
He explained that the service secured a court order for the immediate closure and taking over of the Company’s property until all unpaid taxes are settled.
“We are here to execute the court order giving us permission to distrain Kaduna Electric over tax liabilities of 2015 to 2022,” he said.
“Earlier on, we had a reconciliation meeting with them and we agreed that they were going to pay a substantial amount of the N600 million due to the Kaduna State Internal Revenue Service and they reneged.
“We have had several discussions with them after then and each time they will say they will pay and they have not paid till now. So that directive is from the court to distrain them. The place will remain locked till they succumb to the existing agreement that we had with them.”
According to Adams, it is a criminal offence to evade tax, adding that the government will not watch as people have disregard for the payment of taxes. (Channels TV).
