The Kaduna State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says it will begin to sanction motorists that make phone calls while on wheels or fail to obey traffic signals.
The Sector Commander, Hafiz Mohammed, disclosed this in a statement in Kaduna on Friday, adding that the enforcement would commence on March 1.
He explained that the command observed with dismay the indiscriminate habit of some drivers, who disobey traffic lights and signs on the roads.
According to him, such habit causes confusion and avoidable crashes.
“This is contrary to regulation 156 (1) (b) of the National Road Traffic Regulation (NRTR) 2012, which mandates the motoring public to obey all traffic signs and signals on any public road.
“And any person caught contravening this regulation shall be liable to pay a fine of N5,000 or nine months imprisonment or both,” Mohammed added.
He also decried “the growing trend in use of communication devices while driving”.
He stated that the act contravened regulation 166 (i) of the NRTR, 2012 and Section 10 (4) (ff) of FRSC Act 2007, which prescribes making or receiving phone calls while driving as an offence.
He explained that the offence attracts a punishment of N4,000 fine or six months imprisonment or both.
The state FRSC boss also warned against overloading of vehicles above prescribed limit, driving beyond prescribed speed limit as well as dangerous and wrongful overtaking.
He listed other traffick offences as “Vehicles causing obstruction, driving under the influence of drug or alcohol and driving or parking on footways or pavements”.
He warned that violators of the offences would have their vehicles impounded and would be punished in accordance with the law. (NAN)
