The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Administration has intensified efforts to address the recent vandalism of sewage manhole covers across Abuja highways.
Investigations have identified Abuja Steel Company, located along the Abuja-Kaduna Road, as one of the alleged receivers of the stolen manhole covers.
According to the Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media to the FCT Minister, Lere Olayinka, noted that exhibits linked to the stolen covers have been recovered from the company and are now in police custody.
According to him, security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), are conducting further investigations into the company’s involvement, alongside other parties, in the removal, purchase, and melting of the covers.
The development followed reports on recent arrests and recoveries made by the Police and NSCDC.
The apprehended suspects are said to be cooperating with authorities, providing useful information about the buyers of the vandalized infrastructure.
In line with directives from the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, the replacement of the stolen manhole covers commenced yesterday to ensure public safety and restore the city’s infrastructure.
The FCT Administration reiterated its commitment to cracking down on vandalism and ensuring that those involved in the illegal activities face the full wrath of the law.
