The story of Tayo Aduloju is one that intertwined faith, education, and a relentless pursuit of social change. From his early years attending multiple primary schools due to his father’s job postings, to his theological studies and academic achievements, Tayo’s journey has shaped his philosophy of theology and social sciences.
Today, he is a scholar-practitioner dedicated to solving policy problems and creating positive socioeconomic change. Let’s delve into the remarkable path that has led Tayo Aduloju to become a global leader and advocate for public value.
Early Life and Education
Oluwatayo David Aduloju was born on the 24th of May 1976, at the Naval Hospital, on Point Road, Apapa, Lagos State, Nigeria, into the Family of the Late Sir, Major-General, Alfred Olaseinde and Lady Ojis Aduloju.
Tayo’s father hailed from Ikare Akoko, Ondo State and his mother hailed from Iga Okpaya, Benue State. At the time of Tayo Aduloju’s birth, his father, who was one of the young officers and principal actors in the 29 July 1975 coup that unseated the then military head of state, General Yakubu Gowon.
Consequently, Alfred Aduloju served on every Supreme Military Council from 1975 till 1984, when he retired, holding critical military leadership positions including General Officer Commanding (GOC) of Nigerian Army’s 1st Division (1981-1983) and 82 Division (1975-1983), and Commandant of the Nigerian Armed Forces Command and Staff College (1983-1984).
In his tribute to his father, Tayo noted that Alfred Aduloju instilled in him a quest for excellence and a commitment to the well-directed intellectual effort. Alfred and Ojis Aduloju’s work ethic and the extensive family library would shape how Tayo’s mind evolved. His access to books on politics, philosophy, religion, science, technology, military, power, and government, coupled with a front-row seat to power, would leave an inedible mark on his young mind.
A Foundation of Faith and Education:
Growing up as part of the Aduloju family meant constant relocation for Tayo, as his father’s job required frequent moves. This resulted in him attending various primary schools across Nigeria, including Command Children School Yaba, Lagos, and Command Children School Kaduna. Tayo’s primary education culminated at Corona Primary School Apapa, Lagos. Later, he obtained his Secondary School Certificate from Command Secondary School in Ipaja, Lagos.
Influences of Devotion and Mentoring:
The powerful influence of Ojis Aduloju, Tayo’s deeply devout Christian mother, and her spiritual father, the late Reverend Dr. Moses Iloh, played a significant role in shaping his future. Inspired by Reverend Iloh’s guidance, Tayo decided to pursue seminary and theological studies. Under the academic supervision of Reverend Iloh, he attended the International Bible College and Seminary, where he earned a Bachelor of Theology degree (BTh) with a focus on Systematic Theology and Classical Studies.
A Life Committed to Ministry and Peace:
Ordained as a minister and scholar of peace by the United Christian Church and Ministerial Association, Tayo Aduloju became affiliated with the prestigious Club of Rome. These early experiences, combined with his role as a Scholar of Peace, coordinating social security and protection outreaches in impoverished parts of Nigeria, shaped Tayo’s Critical Realist Views. He believed that faith must be expressed through its impact on social well-being, economic prosperity, and good governance.
A Diverse Educational Journey:
While continuing his work as a Scholar of Peace, Tayo pursued a Bachelor of Technology degree from the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Ondo State, Nigeria. However, his educational pursuits extended beyond theology and technology.
Tayo is a member of the Mixed Methods International Research Association (MMIRA), emphasizing well-directed scientific inquiry through mixed methods studies. He holds multiple advanced degrees, including a Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Economic Policy and Public Administration and a Doctor of Business Administration (honoris causa) in Strategic Management. Additionally, Tayo earned master’s degrees in Data, Economics and Development Policy, Public Administration, and Business Administration.
Academic Achievements and Fellowships:
Tayo’s dedication to scholarship and leadership has earned him recognition and fellowships from esteemed institutions. He is a graduate and alumnus of the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, having completed programs such as the School Senior Executive Fellows and International Security Program.
He holds an HKS Executive Certificate in Economic Development. Tayo is a fellow of various professional institutions, including The Chief of Staff Association, the Institute of Strategic Management (Nigeria), and the Institute of Management Consultants (USA). He also completed the OPHI Building National Multidimensional Poverty Index Program at Oxford University.
Public Value and Leadership:
Tayo’s graduate studies have been deeply influenced by the Theory and Practice of Creating Public Value. His encounter with Professor Mark H. Moore at Harvard University in 2010 and 2011 introduced him to the concept of public value as the core doctrine of Public Administration Ethos.
