President Goodluck Jonathan has called on top politicians who want to realize their political ambitions in 2015 to come to the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), saying “time to join us is now”.
He sent the clear message while addressing a rally in Owerri, Imo state capital tagged “Unity Rally” organized to welcome back top politicians from the state who recently defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the PDP.
The President again, noted that PDP remains the only stabilizing party in Nigeria. While regretting the internal crisis that led to the defection of key party chieftains to the other parties ahead of the 2011 election, he assured all party members that the situation would not repeat itself again.
“We are here for a unity rally, we are here because some of us stepped aside and they have stepped back into the party.
“The PDP has come back strong in Imo state. I welcome all of you back to the party. PDP promotes rule of law, inclusiveness and stability. PDP is the only stabilizing factor in Nigeria’s political journey,” he said.
President Jonathan, said the non-adherence to democratic tenets in 2011, has become a thing of the past, saying “Now we must follow the rule of law and completely follow the concept of democracy.
“This is the only country that can lead the country to where we want to go. The Imo people, have spoken PDP has regained this state.
“We formally welcome our brothers and sisters, without them there will be no politics in Imo state.
“The message today is very clear, the time to join us is now so that there will be nothing like discrimination. This is the best time to join us”.
Speaking earlier, a former of the state, Achike Udenwa, said they left the party because of internal wrangling that led to the loss of the 2011 governorship election to the then APGA.
He however assured that with the return of top APC leaders in the state to the PDP, the APC-led government would be sacked from Imo Government House in 2015.
Top party chieftains present at the rally were Vice President Namadi Sambo, Senate President David Mark, National Chairman, Adamu Mu’azu, PDP BoT Chairman, Tony Anenih, Deputy Senate President Ike Ekwerenmadu, Deputy Speaker Emeka Ihedioha, former governor Ikhedi Ohakim and many others.
