The Management of the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) says the nurses and doctors are improvising for operation, in spite of the on-going strike by the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU).
Mrs Elizabeth Ajiboye, the Director, Corporate Affairs Department of the hospital, stated this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ilorin on Friday.
She stated that the facility was not turning away any patients because of the strike.
Ajiboye, however, confirmed that some essential services were hampered, including the three laboratory and pharmacy services due to the strike.
She said that nurses at UITH were not members of the union and were on ground to fill the vacuum where necessary.
“The nurses are coping with the work on ground, though the work is slow due to lack of essential services.
“We are not turning away any patient, both in-patient and out-patient are attended to, ” she said.
NAN reports that JOHESU and the Assembly of Health Care Professional Association had directed their members to embark on an indefinite strike.
JOHESU is the umbrella body of health workers’ unions and associations, including the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria and the Nigeria Union of Allied Health Professionals.
The health workers are demanding the immediate approval and implementation of the technical committee report on CONHESS adjustment by the Federal Government.
The union is also advocating immediate payment of the omission and shortfall in the COVID-19 hazard and inducement allowances of affected health workers in the federal health institutions. (NAN)
