Italy is experiencing a serious heat wave, with the country’s Health Ministry issuing its highest heat warning level for 17 major cities, including Florence, Bologna and the capital Rome.
The warning means even healthy people in affected regions could experience physical difficulties.
The Italian Meteorological Service is forecasting temperatures could reach 38 degrees Celsius in Rome and Florence, and between 36 and 37 degrees in Bologna and Perugia.
It is also expected to be particularly hot in some areas of the southern Italian regions of Apulia and Basilicata.
As well as on the Mediterranean island of Sicily, with the 40-degree mark likely to be surpasses in some areas.
A high-pressure system has been bringing searing temperatures to Italy for several days.
High humidity is making the heat in the cities particularly unbearable.
Meanwhile, according to meteorologists, the heat wave is expected to last until Sunday.
After that, a slight cooling with more tolerable temperatures is expected in some regions, especially in the north.
This could be accompanied by severe thunderstorms. (dpa/NAN).
