Like the Holy Bible says “One generation passes away, and another generation comes; but the earth remains forever”- (Ecclesiastes 1:4.)
This is the reality of life and thus the eight years “Rescue Mission Government” of Governor Rochas Okorocha has ended today the 29th May 2019.
And with the official end of his regime, Gov. Okorocha has joined the ranks of Ex- this, Ex- that. He has also joined the long list of Imo state retired civil servants and a pensioners.
Okorocha has come down now from his high horse and the man who ruled the state like an Emperor has been “derobed” by the Nigerian Constitution which stipulates that an elected Governor Must Vacate office after Two Terms of 4 years each, at once or at a different time.
For Okorocha he is one of the two civilian Governors to have done 8 years in a stretch. The other is Chief Achike Udenwa. Ex- Gov. Dr. Ikedi Ohakim did not get the opportunity to do 8 years.
For the past 8 years, Okorocha bestrode Imo State political landscape like a Colossus or better still like a big elephant in the China shop and in fact, using his Executive Powers to trample on anyone opposed to his style of governance.
Hiding under the Rescue Mission Government’s policy of urban renewal, Okorocha embarked on vendetta never witnessed in our state as residential buildings, business premises, public places, etc took a big hit in Imo state as bulldozers brought them down without compensation. Also, Okorocha brought his own brand of government known in Imo state as “Family-ocracy” whereby all his blood relations got juicy Appointments from Imo state Governor with his Son- in-law Mr. Uche Nwosu as the Chief Beneficiary.
Nwosu, who in 2011 applied but failed to get a job in Gov. Ohakim’s Imo 10, 000 Job Scheme has 8 years later become a “Money- bag” and “Political Juggernaut” and even contesting Governorship election to rule Imo state. Why not?
His palm kernels were cracked for him by his Father- in-law, Gov. Okorocha whom he married his daughter. Nwosu was given several appointments and assignments by his Father-in-law who patronized him heavily.
He worked with him in the Imo State Government House for 8 years and in the process served as Special Adviser on Land Matters and was later appointed the Commissioner of lands, Survey and Urban Development. He used this office to ensure that the “dynasty” acquired so much lands to the detriment of the citizens.
Not done, Gov. Okorocha brought Nwosu “home” to serve as his Chief of Staff but with Executive Powers, in fact, he was the Unofficial Deputy Governor after he fell out with his Deputy, Prince Eze Madumere.
With these choice portfolios and the perks of office, Nwosu became the proverbial”Nwanza” the bird. Let me leave it at that.
But Okorocha was not done with his family members – brothers, sisters, in-laws, offsprings, cousins- occupying important offices in his government even as his own blood sister was appointed the Imo Commissioner for Happiness and Fulfilment (whatever that means).
Others held quasi- positions and with powers to engage in profitable business ventures like Sand excavations, boutiques, fast-food outlets and running of the State-owned Imo Transport Company (ITC).
In the face of all these, Imolites were cowed and intimidation was the order of the day as the people and their means of livelihood were literally destroyed. A once vibrant state suddenly became a reference point for bad governance. It was that bad.
The shenanigans going on in the state reached its limits when God intervened in the affairs of Imo state in the last Governorship by granting the players of Ndi Imo to have a Brand New Governor and thus He gave us Rt. Hon. Chukwuemeka Nkem Ihedioha.
As the Mbaise-born top politician takes over the reigns of Power today to govern Imo State for the first 4 years, this is to remind him as a fellow Anglican Communion faithful to avoid the mistakes his predecessors made in taking some crucial decisions.
Remember the words in the book of Ecclesiastes 1:4 ( Vanity of vanities, all is vanity”.
Yesterday there was an apostle of “Iberiberism” who vallified, denigrated and demonized his immediate predecessor and prancing about that he has “retired” all the Imo State- born top politicians.
But today, 29th May he is out of office. And after today he will discover that the large army of his fans will disappear.
In Imo a New Sheriff is in Town.Anaghi eji Igbo agwa ya onye ocha.Happy Inauguration Gov. Ihedioha.
