LAPAI – The Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai says it will employ the ”Turnitin” software to check academic plagiarism.
Dr Kabir Adamu, the Turnitin Administrator in the institution, said this would encourage academicians, researchers and students to be original in their works.
Turnitin is an Internet-based plagiarism-prevention commercial service launched in 1997.
Typically, universities and high schools buy licenses to submit essays to the Turnitin website, which checks the documents for unoriginal content.
Adamu said that some students copy and paste other people’s work without considering the academic and legal implications of such action.
“Turnitin is a means that rewards hard work through research paper writing. It helps the academics to check for quality and originality in academic work.
“It has helped lecturers to examine papers and found out whether the student had plagiarised the text from an unquoted author,” he said.
Adamu added that the university was in the first phase of passing students’ works through “turnitin”, adding that the software would be incorporated into its platform.
“By so doing IBB University would gain global recognition academically that will be beneficial to the student and the university,” he said.
The coordinator said that the new initiative was not meant to sabotage the effort of students but to make them self reliant and able to compete globally.
“We insist on it so that we can improve them and make them to troubleshoot and get it right by hard work.
“Student should see the positive side of this vision as other people will read their work online and that start building their academic moral,” he said. (NAN)
