Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has refuted allegations suggesting his involvement in the impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa, the former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
Through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Gboyega Akosile, the governor stated that the impeachment was solely a legislative matter and denied any personal influence over the process.
“There is no truth in the claims that the governor played any part in the impeachment. The decision was entirely within the hands of the lawmakers,” Akosile told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday.
He also emphasized, “Governor Sanwo-Olu remains focused on serving the over 20 million residents of Lagos. The events in the Assembly were the prerogative of the legislators, and the governor, like the public, followed the developments through the media.”
Obasa, who represented Agege 1 Constituency and had been Speaker since 2015, was removed in a special session on Monday. Thirty-two of the 40 members voted for his removal, citing alleged misconduct.
In the aftermath, Mrs. Mojisola Meranda (APC-Apapa 1) was immediately sworn in as the new Speaker, and Mr. Fatai Adebola (APC-Ibeju Lekki 1) was elected as Deputy Speaker. Additionally, the Assembly indefinitely suspended Clerk Mr. Olalekan Onafeko and dissolved all principal positions and committees.
