Yobe State House of Assembly Standing Committee on Public Accounts has commended the state government for the timely completion of Abbatoir/Potiskum Roundabout Dual Carriage road in Damaturu.
The Committee’s Chairman, Alhaji Bulama Bukar gave the commendation when he led other members of the committee to inspect the 4.5 km road on an oversight function.
The Abbatoir/Potiskum Roundabout Dual Carriage road was awarded in 2018 at a contract sum of N1.12bn.
According to chairman of the committee, the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) empowers legislators to go for oversight function to ensure checks and balances between the Executive and the Legislature.
The chairman, however, expressed concern over the slow pace of work at the 25.8km Maryam Sani Abacha Hospital/Kalallawa village road also in Damaturu.
He noted that the work done so far was not commensurate to 60 per cent of the total contract sum released to the contractor, Rick Rock Construction Company.
Bukar called on the Yobe State Ministry of Works to prevail on the contractor to speed up the project which was awarded in 2018 to ease the suffering of motorists.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of works, Alhaji Suleiman Jibrin who accompanied the committee members on the over sight function, the Abbatoir/Potiskum Roundabout road was constructed through direct labour.
Jibrin, however, said Maryam Sani Abacha Hospital/Kalalawa road which was awarded at N4.99 billion was delayed by the contractor due to the COVID-19 lockdown.
He assured the committee that the contractor would soon complete the project as he had returned to site.
