Gunmen on Friday attacked a police van at a checkpoint in Nnewi, killing one of the policemen.
One other policeman who was seriously injured is receiving treatment in the hospital.
The policemen on duty were said to have tried to confront the gunmen when one of them threw an improvised explosive device at the police team and one of the policemen died instantly.
The state Police command in the state has confirmed the incident, saying that manhunt for the attackers has begun.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Tochukwu Ikenga, in a statement said: “The Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Obono Itam has ordered manhunt operations on the gunmen who attacked the Police team at a checkpoint at Omata junction along Nnewi -Oba road.
“The operation led by Assistant Commissioner in charge of Nnewi Area Command is already working with the locals in the area to unmask and apprehend the attackers.
“The Police team has already taken over the area and further details shall be communicated.”(VANGUARD).
