Enugu Government House was attacked by gunmen numbering about 50 in the early hours of Saturday.
Governor Sullivan Chime was however in his country home at Udi when the armed men struck. But, his Chief Press Secretary, Chukwudi Achife, confirmed the report.
The Chief Security Officer to the Governor (CSO), Fidelis Ogarabe, who confirmed this to newsmen, said they attempted to enter the premises.
In the counter attack by security personnel that followed, one person was killed while three sustained injuries.
“I left the Government House at about 2am and was in my house when I received a call from my men around 4am alerting me of the presence of some armed invaders at the Government House.
“I drove to the place immediately and saw some persons numbering about 50 armed with machetes at the gate, trying to force their way into the premises.
“I ordered my men to move into action immediately and one of them was gunned down while three others were arrested.
“The others threw away their machetes and escaped,” the CSO narrated.
According to Ogarabe, items recovered from them include machetes, flags and insignia linked to a cult group.
He also said personnel of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps suffered machete cuts while a military patrol vehicle was also attacked.
Those arrested have been handed over to the nearby New Haven Police Station.
It was gathered that State Commissioner of Police, Adamu Abubakar, had already visited the Government House.
