The wife of Ekiti State Governor, Mrs Bisi Fayemi has called on residents of Gbonyin Local Government Area of the State to expose perpetrators of Gender Based Violence (GBV).
Fayemi, who made the call at a stakeholder’s forum held in Aisegba, Ekiti on Tuesday, said that the criminal act needed to be checked.
She said that exposing the perpetrators would enhance the enforcement of all the existing laws on Anti – Gender Based Violence on anyone found culpable.
Fayemi expressed disappointment that 98 per cent of the GBV victims were women, adding that concerted effort was needed to stop the trend.
“We have put in place a rehabilitation centre for the victims in Ado Ekiti, there is also a clinic meant for the affected people at the state teaching hospital.
“So, do not hesitate to call public numbers made available when such cases rear its ugly head in our various communities” she said .
Fayemi solicited the cooperation of people in the area in ridding the state of criminal acts.
In his speech, the Chairman Gbonyin Local Government Area, Mr Ayodele Fadumiye thanked the governor’s wife for sustaining the fight against gender violence through her visits to relevant authorities.
Fadumiye said the council’s collaboration with the state Ministry of Justice was yielding positive result going by the number of people so far prosecuted.
A member of the state House of Assembly, Princess Teju Okuyiga stressed the need for women to report cases of sexual violence to the appropriate quarters.
Okuyiga said that the existing laws would never be compromised on whoever was found guilty no matter how highly placed.
The Commissioner for Women Affairs, Alhaja Marian Ogundana said it was everyone’s duty to join government in checking the menace.(NAN)
