By Mohammed Yangida, Lafia Governor Umaru Al-Makura of Nasarawa state has promised to establish three teachers training colleges in each of the three senatorial zone in the state before the end of his tenure.
The three teachers training colleges are to be established in Lafia, Wamba and Keffi local government areas of the state.
Speaking on Sunday during a two-day retreat organised by the Association of Old Students of Government Teachers College Keffi, the Governor said the decision to establish the training colleges was to set a standard for all categories of teachers in ensuring quality education in the state.
He explained that the financial commitment of establishing the three teachers training colleges would be captured in the state 2016 annual budget.
“The state government would set a standard for all categories of teachers to ensure quality education particularly at the primary school level,” he said.
He promised to continue to give education the desired attention and call for advice on how to move the state forward.
He also assured the Old Students that by next year the state government would reconstruct the Government Teachers College Keffi as part of efforts to restore it to its past glory.
The Executive Chairman Nasarawa State Universal Basic Education Board (NSUBEB), Abdulkarim Muhammed also appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to establish a first Teachers University in Nasarawa state.
During the retreat, awards of excellent were given to some outstanding old students of the college.
