Gombe State Government says it has begun fertiliser blending to enhance farmer access to the commodity and encourage agricultural activities in the state.
Mr Mohammed Magaji, Commissioner for Agriculture and Animal Husbandry, stated this at the inauguration of the inputs distribution exercise to 150 rice farmers, on Wednesday in Gombe.
Magaji said the blending plant in the state had procured raw materials to start the production of NPK brand of fertiliser to meet local demand.
“There is a restriction on Urea brand of fertiliser in some of the Northeastern states, Gombe inclusive.
“We have been running up and down to the National Security Adviser to see that they allow Urea brand of fertiliser to come into Gombe.
“I am happy to inform you that we have decided to recalibrate the blending plant from 20-10-10 to 15-15 which I believe is more expensive.
“Presently; they are producing 15-15 for us to give to the farmers. We are happy that we are now blending our own fertiliser here for the benefit of our farmers,” he said.
He assured that by April 2022, the fertiliser would be available in different stores across the state.
The Commissioner announced plans by the state government to begin sale of fertiliser to the farmers for the 2021 cropping season on Friday July 16.
Magaji said that with the support of the Federal Government in terms of fertiliser distribution, the commodity would be sold to farmers at subsidised rate.
The gesture, he said, would further crash prices of the commodity in the market.
Magaji reiterated the commitment of Gov. Inuwa Yahaya-led administration towards creating an enabling environment for farmers to peacefully carry out farming activities in the state.
Gov. Yahaya’s relentless efforts within and outside the state to improve agricultural sector and the livelihoods of rural dwellers is commendable.”
While commending the Federal Government for the distribution of input to rice farmers, Magaji said the gesture would complement state government efforts and improve the wellbeing of farmers.
He said the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari had prioritised agriculture aimed at improving the food security in the country.
The Commissioner urged farmers to always utilise inputs given to them to ensure that the motive of such gesture was not defeated. (NAN)
