By Dozzy Samuel Super Falcons’ two goals scored by Amarachi Okoronkwo and Chioma Wogu were not enough to secure victory as Dominion Hotspurs FC of Lagos ran away with a slim 3-2 win over the African Champions in a hotly contested friendly match played at Atlantic Hall Sports Centre Epe on Thursday evening.
The match which was facilitated by Yagazie Foundation incorporated gave the Super Falcons Technical Adviser, Thomas Dennerby the opportunity to assess the team’s preparations for the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON) slated to kick off in Ghana on November 17.
The Swede tactician ensured that all the players currently in Epe camp tested action within the 90 minutes of the game.
Although Hotspurs boys were bigger and older than the U- 16 boys requested for by Falcons Coach, Dennerby’s ladies gave a very good account of themselves to the admiration of the handful of spectators and Journalists who covered the match.
An unexpected shot outside the box by Falcons midfielder, Amarachi Okoronkwo early in the first half gave the national team a lead. But Hotspurs responded with a quick goals of their own before adding two more goals as the game progressed.
Dennerby however made several changes with the last set of players who played in the second half putting up a brave fight with the introduction of Sweden based defender Faith Ikhidi-Michael controlling the back four and pushing the midfielders help the forwards to launch attack give birth to Wogu’s goal late on.
Falcons fought back gallantly but could not equalise before the referee ended the match.
