Two second half goals by forward Megan Rapinoe from the spot in the in the 61st minute and midfielder, Rose Lavelle in the 69th minute ensured that the United States of America (USA) defeated hard-fighting Netherlands 2-0 in the epic final of the 8th FIFA Women’s World Cup final at the Lyon Olympic Stadium in France.
The result gifted Team USA the victory they deserved and the title they workd hard for . It was the Americans fourth FIFA Women’s World Cup trophy and the second cup won under their Head Coach, Jill Ellis.
It was a match that the Dutch Head Coach, Sarina Wiegman wanted to win and her team started brightly in the opening minutes and they soaked up the pressure from the fierce attacking Team USA who could not get a breakthrough till the end of the first half.
On resumption, the Dutch were on the back foot as the Americans came at the them and it was clear that they will get their goals and that they did when Rapinoe and Lavelle scored.
All efforts by the Dutch to score against the USA did not yield any result till the final whistle.
At the end FIFA President Gianni Infantino and General Secretary Fatma Samoura together with French President Emmanuel Macron presented medals and awards to the winners. Team USA Captain Carli Lloyd lifted the FIFA Women’s World Cup Trophy..
