Forces move against Clerk to NASS over 5-year extension in retirement age, year of service
New facts have emerged as to why some forces in and outside the National Assembly have decided to run a campaign of calumny against the Clerk to the National Assembly (CNA), Mr Sani Magaji Tambuwal.
A series of adversarial publications have been pushed out in recent times through a section of the media alleging a number of infractions of the civil service rules and breach of legislative procedures for authentication of bills against Tambuwal.
Feelers indicated that the crux of the matter is the move by the National Assembly bureaucracy to push through a legislation to amend the age and length of service that a staff must attain beyond which he cannot stay put in service.
The legislation, which has been proposed for amendment and is being taken through public hearing, seeks to move up the retirement age from 60 to 65 years and retirement on the basis of length or years of service from 35 to 40 years.
It would be recalled that the proposal was first mooted under two former Clerks to the National Assembly, to wit: Mohammed Ataba Omolori and Amis Olatunde Ojo, but it was defeated because the staff members protested and moved against it describing the idea behind it as selfish and motivated by sight-tight desire of the CNAs.
However, it was confirmed that this time round, the staff members were the ones who pushed for the proposal, describing the timing as ripe and appropriate. Tambuwal, as gathered, did not make the proposal.
But how this becomes a problem for the incumbent Clerk to the National Assembly is rooted in the plot by some external forces and stakeholders in the legislature to edge him out ahead of his retirement in November 2024.
Credible pieces of information gathered from sources close to the development in the National Assembly said that a former presiding officer who is interested in ensuring that his candidate takes over as Clerk to the National Assembly is behind the adversarial stunt in the media to damage the reputation of the incumbent Clerk and possibly have him removed from office before the expiration of his retirement in 2024.
The forces working against the Clerk to the National Assembly who want to supplant him before his retirement fear that if the amendment to the retirement age and years of service happened before November 2024, he would benefit from the amendment for an extended stay of additional five years since he would just be 60 years old in February 2025. He is expected to proceed on his three-month pre-retirement leave in November 2024. READ ALSO:

A staff member who spoke on the issue lamented that some powerful people within the National Assembly were acting in concert with vested interests in the Presidential Villa who were not too comfortable with Sani Magaji Tambuwal remaining in the office as the CNA.
The forces have also allegedly lined up a successor behind the CNA, which as gathered has been the reason the campaign to damage his character has been intensified in recent times with the aim of getting the National Assembly Service Commission to provide some grounds upon which to ease him out before his time.
