Nigeria’s First Lady and President, African First Ladies Peace Mission, Dame Patience Faka Jonathan, has maintained that sustainable peace can be achieved if everyone is committed to investing in it.
The First Lady stated this Tuesday in Abuja when she received office equipment from the Government of China on behalf of the African First Ladies Peace Mission, AFLPM.
In her remarks, Mrs. Jonathan recalled that the visit of the Premier of the People’s Democratic Republic of China to Nigeria, Mr. Li Keqiang, to Abuja recently, afforded her the opportunity of fruitful discussions with the wife of the Premier, Madam Cheng Hong.
She further stated that during that meeting, the Premier’s wife had offered to assist the Peace Mission with donations of office equipment for use in the Secretariat.
Dame Jonathan observed that, “Today’s formal presentation of the equipment, is a fulfillment of the promise made by Madam Cheng to support the modest efforts and contributions of the Peace Mission in carrying out its objectives.”
While expressing her appreciation to Madam Cheng and to the Government of China for the items, Dame Jonathan said that the equipment would be put to effective use in the Peace Mission Secretariat.
The AFLPM President also used the occasion to commend the good relations between Nigeria and the People’s Democratic Republic of China.
The First Lady highlighted some of the peace efforts of the Mission and maintained that she remained steadfast in her commitment to doing all she could to promote peace in Africa.
In his remarks, the Ambassador of China to Nigeria, Mr. Gu Xiaojie, stated that the Chinese Government was highly impressed by the passion and commitment with which the First Lady perused peace initiatives through AFLPM. He also applauded her work that supports under-privileged children as well as her women empowerment programmes through her NGOs the A. Aruera Reachout Foundation and the Women for Change and Development Initiative. He said that his government was willing to collaborate with AFLPM as well as the First Lady’s NGOs.
The African First Ladies Peace Mission is an international organization that helps to build and strengthen the culture of peace and development in Africa, while offering support and services to victims of conflict, especially among women and children in African countries.
