The Federal Capital Territory Administration, FCTA has concluded arrangements to resuscitate and flag off the annual vaccination and treatment of livestock herd in Abuja.
The FCT Minister, Muhammad Musa Bello, who was represented by the Acting Secretary of Agriculture and Rural development, Dr. Musa Abubakar Aliyu, made this disclosure on Friday after meeting with the some senior staff of the FCT Agriculture and Rural Development Secretariat in his office at Area 11, Abuja.
The exercise is scheduled to take place between the 3rd and 4th week of this month with focus mainly on livestock in grazing areas of Gwagwaglada, Old Gawu, Fulani herds in Abaji, Bwari, Karshi, Kwali, Kuje and Yaba.
The Minister revealed that the programme was last held in 2013, which is a testimony of the commitment of the current FCT Administration to revive the Agriculture sub-sector.
Bello reiterated that the FCT Administration would provide support and encourage livestock farmers to embrace settlement in grazing reserves.
According to him, this will also prevent the outbreak of infectious diseases of livestock as well as provide treatment for the infected ones.
He emphasised that the programme will create effective communication network and synergy with livestock farmers towards the growth of the livestock industry in the Territory.
His words: “This will not only generate employment to the teeming youth in the Federal Capital Territory but would also boost incomes and generate wealth especially for the livestock farmers.”
“The exercise will be flagged off in Paikon-Kore Grazing Reserve in Gwagwalada Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory,” he added.
Meanwhile, in continuation of the FCT Administration’s efforts to check the resurgence of Avian Influenza (Bird Flu) in the Territory, Malam Bello remarked that his Administration has also undertaken holistic fumigation of poultry / animal farms across the Territory.
The Minister further disclosed that the FCT Administration would soon embark on the registration of Poultry farmers in the entire 8,000 square kilometres of the Territory.
