The contract of Super Falcons head coach Randy Waldrum may have ended after Nigeria crashed out of Paris 2024 Olympics Women’s Football Tournament in France without winning any game out of three group matches.
Nigeria was eliminated after Waldrum’s side lost all three matches against Brazil, Spain and Japan with Super Falcons beaten 1-0 by Canarinhas of Brazil and Spain’s La Roja respectively and also slumped to 3-1 loss to Japan in their last Group C match on Wednesday at Stade de la Beaujoire in Nantes.
Prompt News exclusively gathered that Waldrum’s contract which was extended earlier in the year by Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) after he led the country to the knockout rounds of the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, will not be renewed the second time when it expires at the end of Paris 2024 Olympics.
“Randy Waldrum’s contract may have technically ended with the elimination of Nigeria from the ongoing Paris 2024 Olympics in France because he was given a one year contract extension in January 2024 and it was clearly stated that the contract will expire after Paris 2024 Olympics”, an NFF board member who pleaded anonymity said.
The source also argued that the Super Falcons have no immediate continental and global competitions to attend hence the continued retention of the coach who does not reside in Nigeria to work and discover new talents from the Nigeria women’s football leagues will amount to the waste of scarce resources which will be better deployed to the development of women football in Nigeria.
Said he: “The WAFCON 2024 in Morocco which was one of the reasons Waldrum’s contract was extended has been postponed to July 2025 and the only competition for 2024 is the Paris 2024 Olympics which did not go well for the team. So, it means that his contract is not going to be extended because it will be foolhardy to continue to pay for services not rendered”.
The Texan was first appointed Super Falcons coach on October 5, 2020, barely three years after turning down the role in October 2017 to become the technical adviser and head coach of Super Falcons and the contract which ended in October 31, 2023 was extended in January 2024 to cover WAFCON Morocco 2024 and Paris 2024 Olympics which will end this month.
