KANO- The ancient City of Kano on Thursday, Eid-el Fitri celebration staged its traditional Durbar Festival- #KanoDurbar16.
Aimed at showcasing Kano’s rich culture, the day started with residents and visitors alike going to the Emir of Kano’s Palace to witness how Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II, would come out of the palace on horse in a long procession by well-dressed horsemen in traditional embroided attires
The Emir later received dignitaries who had come to pay the traditional Durbar homage.
Later in the evening, the Durbar Festival was a colourful event to behold. It was witnessed by thousands of people from within and outside the state.
This year’s Durbar was also witnessed by Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje and the Minister of Environment, Hajiya Amina Mohammed and Foreign Diplomats.
The Director-General, Media and Communications to the Governor, Salisu Tanko Yakasai, had this to say “The Durbar is celebrated in special occasions like Sallah festivals, honouring of state government & installation of new Emir.
“Durbar is marked with colourful and spectacular display of well-dressed horsemen in traditional embroiled attires.”
The DG Media and Communications to the Governor, Salihu Tanko Yakasai, spoke further on the importance of Durbar, saying it is an avenue to showcase Kano’s very rich culture to the whole world.
According to him, the State Government in its bid to increase the Internally Generated Revenue, IGR, is determined to explore the tourism potential of Durbar with a view to generating huge revenue from it.
Yakasai expressed satisfaction with the publicity that #KanoDurbar16 enjoyed through the various online platforms and social media gurus.
He was particularly excited that #KanoDurbar16 was the No 1 trending issue for two days especially on Twitter, describing it as “unprecedented” in the history of Durbar celebration in the north.
The 1st Durbar was staged during the reign of Sarkin Kano, Abbas in 1911.
It is staged twice a year, during Eid-El-Fitr & Eid-Kabir celebrations. – #KanoDurbar16.
