The leaders of the European Union have committed to collectively donating at least 100 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine to countries in need by the end of 2021.
European Council President Charles Michel’s spokesperson announced on Twitter on Tuesday.
The bloc, which described itself in a joint statement signed off at summit in Brussels as “the largest exporter of COVID-19 vaccines to the world,’’ also said it would help step up production capacity outside the EU.
The announcement comes shortly after World Health Organisation chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned of stark inequity between richer and poorer countries. (dpa/NAN)
