The Lagos State Government has tasked the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) on effective traffic management system, describing it as key to global economic growth.
The Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Transportation, Mr Sola Giwa, gave this charge at the ongoing re-training workshop for another batch of 250 senior LASTMA officers.
The workshop on incident management was held at the Police Training School, Ikeja, on Thursday in Lagos.
Giwa said the two-day workshop was in line with ‘Traffic Management and Transportation’, one of the cardinal programmes of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu as captured in the administration’s (THEMES+) pillars of development in the state.
According to Giwa, the re-training workshop is not about stopping traffic because there will always be traffic, but to prevent major incidents from happening so that the economy of Lagos and that of Nigeria at large will grow.
“The job of traffic management is very important because it contributes and improves the commerce of Lagos, as Lagos is the major driving force of the country’s economy,” he said.
Giwa said the new re-training module was introduced to aid effective execution of duties.
He added the initiative would enlighten LASTMA officers on new innovative ways to optimise their operations in line with international standards and best practices in traffic management.
Earlier in his welcome address, the acting General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, appreciated the Lagos State Government for providing re-training opportunities to both junior and senior officers of the agency.
Bakare-Oki noted that the Lagos State Government last week in collaboration with the Association of Certified Forensic Intelligence and LASTMA Crime Analysts trained the first batch of 250 senior officers of the agency.
