Reprieve has finally come the way of immediate past Governor of Anambra State, Willie Maduaburochukwu Obiano who has been released from the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Abuja.
The embattled former governor breathed the fresh air of freedom on Wednesday night after almost a week in the detention facility of the EFCC, after he was arrested last Thursday, March 17 at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos.
Obiano was picked up alongside his wife, Ebelechukwu by the operatives of EFCC while leaving Nigeria to his home in Houston, Texas, in the United States of America (USA) shortly after handing over to the new governor, Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo.
Prompt News gathered from multiple sources that an official of EFCC has confirmed Obiano’s release from detention even as the official was quoted as saying that the former governor, accused of sundry cases of dipping his hands into the state till during his eight-year stint in office, was released on Wednesday evening, but that his “passport seized as part of his bail conditions.”
Obiano, who was transferred to Abuja and detained at the EFCC headquarters, was reportedly drilled on N5billion Sure-P money, N37billion security vote, withdrawn in cash, as well as some inflated contracts, in the state, where he reportedly left a debt of N109billion and N400million in the coffers of government, according to Governor Soludo.
