As schools across Edo State resumed for a new term, the Executive Chairman of the Edo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Dr. Paddy Iyamu, conducted surprise visits to various schools to assess teachers’ performance and ensure compliance with professional standards.
During an inspection in Benin, Oredo Local Government Area, Dr. Iyamu suspended a primary school teacher for professional misconduct after discovering that the teacher had awarded a correct score to a pupil who had provided an incorrect answer in their workbook.
Expressing his disappointment, Dr. Iyamu highlighted the teacher’s failure to uphold basic teaching standards despite possessing a National Certificate in Education (NCE).
“It is unacceptable that someone entrusted with the education of our children cannot adequately assess their work. This negligence undermines the future of our pupils,” he remarked.
The SUBEB boss, who visited schools such as Uwa Primary School, Adesuwa Primary School, and Akenzua Primary School, reiterated the administration’s commitment to transforming the education sector.
He emphasized the importance of employing competent and dedicated teachers to secure the future of the state’s children.
“We are committed to providing a conducive environment for both teaching and learning. While we will reward hardworking teachers, we will not tolerate indolence or incompetence. Education is key to the development of our state, and we cannot afford to compromise,” he stated.
Dr. Iyamu also inspected ongoing reconstruction projects at schools that had previously been in deplorable conditions.
He commended Governor Monday Okpebholo for prioritizing education and initiating swift action to rebuild dilapidated structures. “The pace of work is commendable, and we are confident that pupils will soon have access to improved learning environments,” he added.
